ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØNC English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Interested in helping someone learn English?

The ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØ Neighborhood Center (ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØNC) is seeking ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØ students to teach English to adult immigrants through weekly conversation classes. Experience teaching or tutoring English is beneficial but not necessary as orientation is provided. This is a great opportunity for language and education majors.

ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØNC Literacy Partnership Program (BLPP)

The ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØNC Literacy Partnership Program (BLPP) is a children's literacy campaign whose mission is to promote literacy among Boston's elementary and middle school age students. Through the program,ÌýɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØ students (graduate and undergraduate) who receive work-study funds serve as tutorsÌýatÌýlocal schools, including:

  • St. ColumbkilleÌýPartnership School
  • The Steppingstone Foundation - College Success AcademyÌý
    Ìý

The average student works three to six hours per week with one or more children. All student volunteers receive orientation/training.

ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØNC Volunteer Tutoring

Our ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØNC Volunteer Tutoring Program matches students from the Allston-Brighton community with Neighborhood Center volunteers for one-on-one tutoring with their school work. The students range in age from elementary school through high school. A commitment of one to two hours of tutoring per week is required.Ìý

The ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØ Neighborhood Center sponsors the ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØ chapter of Girls Inc. at ɬÀï·¬ÏÂÔØÌý(formerly theÌýÌý(SWSG) Program. In 2024, integrated SWSG into its portfolio of programming for girls (read moreÌý). Girls Inc. of Boston and Lynn is the pre-emininent girls' leadership organization equipping girls to reach their full potential throuh mentorship, supportive spaces/welcoming environments, and research-informed programming to adress the challenges girls facer and are proven to help thgem succeed.ÌýThrough GIBL's Project BOLD program, college aged women mentor 8-11 year old girls in local after school settings by building postive and supportive relations that help youth feel empowered and valued.
